I'M exercising futility

So, looking at my buddy list, most people know about the I'M initiative, which is a marketing / charity campaign microsoft has been doing for the last 7 months that donates money to any of 9 organizations based on a string people put in their friendly name on messenger (which shows up as a little colorful I'M icon).  The funny thing is that, looking at the most recent stats, unless things pick up, that I'M icon will end up having been pointless.

As of fairly recently, the page was updated to say that $143,500 dollars have been raised so far.  It sounds like a lotish until you look at the FAQ:
Each of the nine organizations is guaranteed a minimum of $100,000 during the first year of the program.
I think that was a pretty generous stipulation by Microsoft, but the irony of it is that (as I understand it) the final result will be Microsoft donating exactly $100,000 to each organization after the first year, because none of the 9 programs will have received enough to go over the minimum.  (the distribution is definitely not even, but I'm guessing there won't be one that gets enough to go over $100,000).  I could be wrong, and they could be adding donations raised on top of the minimum, but that's not how it's worded - and if that was the case, then they would say that the total raised so far was $1,043,500.  :-)

It would appear that microsoft has mimicked the problem of picking political candidates - if everyone picks one that matches their views exactly, their vote ends up not making a difference, so we all just pick whoever we like most (or dislike least) between the two.

In the spirit of that, everyone on the internet please pick the two that you all like the most, and then each one of you just pick one or the other, because right now, I'M looks like a presidential primary debate.

link between paranoia and lack of aesthetics

So I was reading an article about a woman who is suing archive.org for archiving her site - when she's apparently too lazy to add a robots.txt file instead of posting copyright warnings in all caps on every single page.  Anyway, so I was browsing around her site, which is a fairly paranoid website thinking that the government is trying to steal your children from you, and I started thinking about all of the "crazy person" websites I've ever seen, and how they all have a similar look and feel.  They all use colors that don't go together, they all use multiple fonts in multiple sizes, and flashing or blinking text.  It's as if paranoia causes you to have no sense of aesthetics.  Either that or they're both a result of some sort of brain problem.

It seems like all of the crazy people on the internet could seem a lot more credible if they would stick to maybe one or two fonts, a smaller set of colors that are more compatible, and try to only use capital letters to start words at the beginning of sentences.

Take heed, crazy people, you may be able to get people to listen to you after all.

irony

"Is obesity child abuse?  We take a video of this obese shirtless 8 year old boy that has been taken from his parents and put it on the internet to investigate."

Thanks MSN video.  How would I gawk at those less fortunate than myself without you?

Come hither, SPAM. Come hither.

Dear everyone reading this,
I would like to see if I can get IM spam by distributing my e-mail address to the far reaches of the internet.  Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to use my IM screen name every time you encounter a website that asks for your e-mail address and you think they might use it in a spamalicious way.

(It's for work - I want to see how bad IM spam can get)

go to it, tiger.

eh

I think I'm giving up on trying to blog on spaces.  As trivial as it is, the slowness of the page loads gets to me.  Hopefully it'll continue to improve and I'll be able to come back to it.  :-)

But for now...here's my old blog.  http://www.xanga.com/bdg

You're not allowed to make fun of me because I have a xanga blog.

IE sends cake to firefox 2 team

For the first time ever, I thought the comments marked as 'funny' on slashdot were actually funny...

It's crazy how just a little symbol of goodwill can go a long way.

Cake to the gaim team when they ship 2.0.0, anyone?  ;-)

On driving in the rain

Dear Seattle,
I would like to bring something to your attention that a large percentage of you seem to have overlooked.  That is the issue of driving with your lights on while raining.  Before I continue, let me make it clear that it's not just a good idea, or something that "everybody else does just because they're trained to do it", but it's actually the law.  From the driver's handbook:

"By law, your vehicle’s headlights must be turned on from a half hour after sunset until a half hour before sunrise. Lights must also be on any time conditions make it difficult to see people or other vehicles."
...
"On rainy, snowy, or foggy days, it is sometimes hard for other drivers to see your vehicle. In these conditions, headlights make your vehicle easier to see. Remember, if you turn on your wipers, turn on your headlights."

Remember also that daytime running lights do not count.  Daytime running lights don't light up your back lights, which make it easier for someone to rear-end you.  Also, PARKING LIGHTS ARE NOT FOR RAIN.  Parking lights are for parking, as the name would suggest.  If you were to park off of the side of the road at night, you would turn on these lights.  In most circumstances, you will never need them.  Consider them dead to you.  Seattle, repeat after me: "Parking lights, you are dead to me."

Great.

Thanks for listening.  I expect everyone to have their lights on now when I drive home, since it will no doubt be raining.

The stupid things I've memorized...

I heard Ali saying "One command to rule them all..." or something in the hallway...and the ENTIRE poem from the Lord of the Rings came back to me...[from memory...who knows, this could be totally off...]

three rings for the elven kings under the sky
and seven for the dwarf lords in their halls of stone
nine for mortal men, doomed to die
and one for the dark lord on his dark throne
in the land of mordor where the shadows lie
one ring to rule them all, one ring to find them
one ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
in the land of mordor where the shadows lie

this also reminded me of something else that I have committed to memory...

Too bad I didn't put those neurons to good use...I have a feeling I'm going to want to reuse them I am older.

Bling Bling

So I just got a huge packet in the mail from a foundation telling me that "this brochure will familiarize you with the services we offer, and I want to extend a special invitation to friends like you, whose estates are worth a significant amount ($3 million or more) that require skillful planning and administration."

I think they know something I don't.

Some thoughts for today

Noah just went for a motorcycle ride with a camera strapped to his helmet.  If he crashes, it'll make for a really cool video.

Faith (a little 8 year old) called me fat today.  I'm going running tomorrow morning.

I've been sleeping crazy amounts the last few weeks...it's eating up my time.  I am rigor deficient.

Ballad of a General Math II student

I had forgotten about this until just recently. I thought I would share. (My dad's a highschool math teacher and one of his students wrote a rap song for him.)

This morning I stole a Lexus to get to school
To hear Garrison teach about the golden Rule
General Math II is what he can teach the best
No math teacher can compete (yo) he fades the rest

Right now I'm failin' that class with a 53
But I'll get that 70, just wait and see
Cause math ain't hard if you apply yourself
It gets you good women and a ton of wealth

And I'm out to get knowledge in the '96
I've beatin' down rednecks and a lot of hicks
Cause they've stood in the way of my math degree
And if it happens again (yo) it's the cemetery

So when it comes to math I don't joke around
And if Garrison talks, you best not make a sound
Unless you want to end up bleeding on the ground
[I think my dad tackled him in class one time...]

Chorus:
Garrison's teachin' free of charge
And with what he's teachin' you'll be livin' large
So pay attention in class and do your work
Unless you want to end up bein' a grocery store clerk

The downside of vampirism

The BBQ today was fun - it was the first time in a while that I've played volleyball.  It was also the first time in a while that I've been in the sun for 4 hours straight and got sunburned really badly.  If I buttered my feet up, they would definitely be crispy and delicious.

Goodbye, Summer...

To be quite honest, I won't miss you very much, unlike everyone else.  You weren't good for my vampirish complexion.

I feel lame for posting this, but...

I thought this was actually pretty cool...

And by the way, no, this isn't one of those lame things where a creepy face pops out and screams at you.

---edit---
Ali wanted me to add a disclaimer...this might make your eyes go all funny.  (Sorry Ali)

I am now an old person

This is the first time for me that a good friend from growing up has had a baby.  I was weirded out enough when my friends started getting married left and right.  Now they're going to start popping out babies left and right.

Alright, so...

So I realized today I should probably start making an effort to use spaces before I write it off as having a bad UI.  I just invited everyone in my buddy list to be my friend.  (Possibly the most confusing UX ever - why do I have to ask my buddies to be my friends?)

Anyway, I'll try to start blogging on here instead of xanga, just for the heck of it...I'll try to be a good corporate citizen.  =)  I tried this before, but I gave up.  I do have to admit, however, that I really like the new UI change that spaces just did...despite what people apparently think about it.
